LRT Mutiara Line: A New Era of Connectivity & Growth

Formerly known as the Bayan Lepas LRT Project, this newly optimized alignment honours Penang’s identity as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’ while addressing the island’s growing mobility needs.
Stretching 29.5 km viaduct length with 21 strategically placed stations, the LRT Mutiara Line will connect key areas of Penang Island and the mainland, enhancing accessibility and easing road congestion. Its base alignment runs from Penang South Reclamation Island A (PSR-A) with Penang Sentral and Georgetown’s Komtar Station, ensuring comprehensive coverage with trains running alternately on these routes.
As the northern region’s first integrated metro system, the LRT Mutiara Line is designed for the future. Features like transit-oriented development (TOD), Park & Ride facilities, and last-mile connectivity will provide seamless travel while promoting sustainable urban growth. The line will also link essential hubs such as the Penang International Airport and the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal, creating a central artery for residents and visitors alike.
Construction begins in early 2025, supported by two operational depots along the alignment. More than a transit solution, the LRT Mutiara Line represents a promise: to make Penang a more connected, inclusive, and thriving region. By integrating with future transit lines, it sets the stage for long-term prosperity and livability, transforming the way Penang moves and grows.
PSR-A to KOMTAR: Laying the Foundation for Connectivity
PSR-A to KOMTAR of the Mutiara Line is the foundation of Penang’s new LRT system. Spanning approximately 23.7 kilometers, this segment begins from the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) Island A and extends all the way to Komtar in Georgetown. This initial phase is crucial in establishing the core network, targeting high-density areas with residential, commercial, and educational zones to maximize both ridership and accessibility.
This segment will link major hubs, including Penang International Airport and Sg. Nibong Bus Terminal, positioning it as a central transit artery that will redefine the way residents move around the island. Construction is set to commence in early 2025.
